I wrote a book. It’s on Amazon, and everything. I’m still a little in shock about it.
Writing a book is crazy town–but I really wanted to do it, because I needed to talk to you all about something. I needed to show you something. I wanted to show you awesome quilters out there just how versatile patterns are. How amazing the perfect pattern and quilt can be at transforming a space, and how critical fabric choices are. I wanted to put it into pictures, let you see lots of styles side by side, so you could see exactly what I mean. So you could see that just because a pattern cover shows a quilt made in fabrics you LOATHE, doesn’t mean the whole pattern is a lost cause. In fact–that horrible cover fabric might just be the perfect opportunity for you to make something completely fabulous–completely YOU–just by changing the fabric.
If you’re anything like a lot of people I know, you have to SEE it first. It’s hard to picture just what a quilt will look like in different fabrics when it’s staring you in the face with all those fabrics and colors that just. aren’t. you. It’s much easier to move on to a pattern that shows you JUST what it will look like finished–but you miss out on so much!
SO. I wrote a book that shows you different quilt patterns, and what they look like when you change up the fabric–making the style totally different. Because the goal here, is to make quilts that help your home, and specifically your bedroom–YOU.
I want you to use my book to make the perfect quilt for your room–my guess? You’ve made quilts for all the loved ones you have, and every sweet friend under the moon, but you just haven’t had a chance to make one for your own bed yet. There are also some fun ideas and suggestions for personalizing the “store-bought” parts of your bedding too–sheets, pillowcases and the like.
In Bedroom Style, Perfectly Pieced, I will help you figure out your personal style, which fabrics might be best choices for making a quilt in that style, and give you lots of visuals and whys. It will be like having a friend right there helping you get it just right. When you finish that quilt, and figure out how to apply what you’ve learned to ANY pattern, well, that’s a whole lot more quilting possibilities!
It’s time, friends. Time for you to make the perfect quilt for your bedroom. I’ll even make it easier on you by giving away some fabric bundles…
More about that later. First I need to ask out one simple question:
Are you ready to get lucky?!?
One lucky owner of Bedroom Style, Perfectly Pieced (my book!) is going to win a bedroom makeover!
You guys. Does your bedroom need a makeover? Lucky Spool (my publisher) and I totally agree–you DO need a bedroom facelift! Imagine this: $1000 play money to make your bedroom into the perfect sanctuary you always dreamed of! We think you need a lot of fun accessories, curtains, lamps and rugs to complement the new quilt you make for your bedroom. So, we are giving away a $1,000 gift card to Crate and Barrel to complete you bedroom makeover! For an extra feel-good factor, Lucky Spool is also sending $100 to the charity of your choice too.
I’m super excited about this. I mean, it’s the perfect complement to my book, and to making your style really sing through both beautiful quilts and accessories.

A little late to the party today, I’m afraid! Soccer games and end of summer work parties have kept us busy, busy, busy for the last few days! I’ve had so much fun reading about why your favorite colors are your favorites! I’m excited to ship these prizes off to these lucky ladies, though, who were nice enough to tell me all about their favorite colors!
Email me, ladies, and let me know your address so I can ship some pretty prizes off to you! Also, remember 20% off all PDF patterns in the shop through Sunday night with code MODALOVE. And there are only a few spots left in our QuiltCast MiniSwap, we’d love to have you! Fill out the form, here, and read up on the guidelines here! Come back Monday, for lots of pretty pictures of my Best. Day. EVER! Quilts–I finally got pictures!
Hey there! Thanks for coming by for my day on the Moda Love blog tour! I’m excited to be here and show you my version of the Moda Love Layer Cake Quilt. I kinda LOVE it!
If you’ve never been here before, let me introduce myself really quickly. My name is April Rosenthal, and I am one of the newest designers for Moda (still can’t believe it.) My first line, Best. Day. EVER! is coming out so, so SOON! In fact, I’ve heard rumors that precuts have shipped and should be landing on doorsteps any minute now.
I am a pattern designer for my company, Prairie Grass Patterns, which I started 5 years ago when I had 18 month old twins. Obviously, I was crazy from sleep deprivation to start a business when I did, but it’s been such an incredible ride!
Like I just mentioned, I’m a mama to twins, a boy and a girl, who are 6 years old now. They are literally my world.
I’m so excited to be able to design for Moda (Best. Company. EVER!) and work with all the amazing people there. I love color, and fabric, and quilting, and creating with my hands. So, of course, I feel like my job is the absolute perfect thing for me.
Now, let’s talk about LOVE. :) I’ve been asked to answer a few questions, so here goes!
What is the best part of your design process?
My very favorite part of designing, whether it’s a quilt pattern, or a fabric line is when the whole thing just clicks. There is always excitement at the beginning with choosing colors, and having new ideas, but when the whole thing comes together just perfectly, it’s amazing.
I love the color……
Orange. Orange. Orange. I’m obsessed.
I would love to spend a day with……
My grandparents. They both passed away years and years ago, and I miss them like crazy. If we’re talking about love, they’re the first people I think about. I wish they could meet and love my children.
Finally, I LOVE my quilts! Especially this Moda LOVE Layer Cake quilt. First off, it’s super simple to make. Second, all it takes is a Layer Cake and a background fabric! I chose to use several of my white background prints to make this, but you could use just a single background too. Third, the pattern is FREE. (Click here to download it.) Can’t beat that. I can’t wait to see your versions! Be sure to post pictures on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag #modablogtour so we can all see!
I had a good time personalizing the back of my Moda LOVE quilt too! (I will post the free appliqué pattern this week.) I actually used the back of this quilt as my tablecloth at market…it helped me to remember to be cheerful even when I had to film videos. :)
Since the people over at Moda are so nice, I’d LOVE (alright, I’m getting cheesy now…) to give away some precuts! Just comment on this post telling me what color you LOVE and why. I’ll announce the winners on September 13th.
Be sure and stop by the other Moda designers’ blogs, to see their Moda LOVE quilts, and for more chances to win!
Thank you so much for coming by and come back soon!
PS Pssst! 20% off all PDF patterns in the shop through Sunday night with code MODALOVE.

Winners Announced on ALL Designer Blogs listed above
You guys. I’m writing a book. And today, I get to show you what it (might) look like! Since it’s not coming out ’till this October, things could change still, but for now, this is what the cover is going to look like(!!!).
I’m so excited. I’ve had some of these quilts in my head for YEARS, and I am so stoked to finally be able to get them out of my head on in photos and words! And, of course, in actual quilts! There is more information about Bedroom Style over at the Lucky Spool site, and it’s already on AMAZON, people.(Small freakout moment over here…) Of course, they’re still needing to update some details over there, but they’re taking preorders so YAY!
It’s been dreamy to work with Susanne and the girls at Lucky Spool, and I can’t wait for the final book. In the mean time though, I’m going to keep working my tail off to get it all these gorgeous quilts done. :)
Because I’m so excited, and because I’m up to my eyeballs in book fabric right now, I figured I’d share some of these goodies with you.
That’s right. I’m giving away some Fox Field by Tula Pink for Free Spirit. Why no, it’s NOT in stores yet.
I know you want some.
So here’s the deal. Not only am I super excited about my book coming out, but there’s another piece of news I’ve been sitting on for a while now, and well, it turns out that my bio over at Lucky Spool contains that little spoiler too. If you’d like to win one of these little bundles (12 Fat Eighths), head on over to the Lucky Spool site and check out my bio (and everyone else’s too–there are some awesome guys and gals publishing with LS!) and come back here and tell me what you think my other big news is! I’ll choose one winner from everyone who guesses my news right.
To win the other bundle, share my good news with your friends via Facebook or Instagram–and be sure to tag me (@amrosenthal on IG, Prairie Grass Patterns on FB) in your post so I see it! Be sure you’re following me in both places too! Comments will close Sunday night at 11:59PM MST, and I will announce 2 lucky ducks on Monday morning.
Holy crap is this exciting. I can’t wait.
PS Conveniently, I don’t know where my comments link disappeared to. To make a comment, click on the title of this post, and then scroll down when the page loads. You should see the comment entry form there. Mwa!
