Longarm quilting: Kathy’s Mother-in-Law Sampler Quilt

I got a chance a while back to custom quilt this sampler for my friend Kathy–who made this for her Mother-in-Law for Christmas (how nice is she?). I learned a TON while I was doing it, including that it is impossible to make good looking straight lines without a ruler. (Good thing Kathy is patient with me.)

I did something different in every block, and had a lot of fun with it. In the borders, I did feathers, wishbones, and stacked ovals. This was actually the first quilt I tried feathers on, too. About a billion pictures follow, including some fun shots of the back.

Hope you’re having a fun week! I’ve been fighting off a nasty head cold/bug. Not so fun.

Works-in-progress…

Using these little charm packs to make a quick and easy (and just a little out of my comfort zone) quilt.

The colors are right up my alley, and so are the prints.  I’ve been a fan of Lotta’s long before she was creating fabric. In fact, I think I still have a stationery set from a few years ago on my Amazon wish list. :)

Ignore that this quilt needs to be pressed. There’s only so much daylight. The part that’s out of my comfort zone? That stretched me as a quilter just a bit this week? The asymmetry–and not just a little asymmetry, but a whole quilt full of it. I think it’s interesting that something can still be balanced even though it’s not the same on both sides.

I’m also working on deciding what baking project is worthy of these beautiful eggs from the chickens around the corner. (Thanks Sue!)

I’m working on living up the rest of the summer at the farmer’s markets with a fairy princess.

And her bodyguard, Batman. (Dang, they’re cute.)

I’m also working on a project with this…

Using a whole bunch of these–because hey. Soccer season just started. I’m chillin’ at the field 3 evenings a week and twice on Saturdays. Plus, Halloween is one of the best holidays around.

I’ll keep you posted.

What are you working on?

A Pretty Little Quilt for a Pretty Little Girl

I made this quilt back in April for a little sweetie named Nyah.

She’s my cousin’s best friend’s daughter (you follow that?)

In February of this year, shortly after her fourth birthday, she was diagnosed with Leukemia. She’s 2 weeks older than my goobers.

When I heard the news and asked my cousin how she was doing, she told me about the treatments, and the hospital stays, and how she was losing weight, feeling sick and cold all the time.

I couldn’t do much for the feeling sick, or the hospital, or the treatments–but I sure do know how to help someone who is cold.

Nyah loves being outside, and loves, love, LOVES rainbows. So naturally, a rainbow quilt was in order.

I started with a layer cake of Me and My Sister Designs spring collection Twirl for Moda, and no plan at all. I just started working. (It only took half the squares!)

I felt like the quilt needed her name on it somewhere. I remember as a little kid, anything with my name on it was just that much more special.

I wanted it to be soft, and snuggly, and as gentle as it could possibly be, so I found some coordinating chenille backing, and rounded the corners of the quilt.

I quilted it in an allover wave with a pretty light yellow thread. Kinda reminds me of those egg crate foam mattresses. Remember those?

I got news just recently that her treatments have done their job for now. Her counts are good, and her prognosis is positive.

There’s still quite a way to go for her, but thank heaven for miracles–and soft snuggly quilts that remind a little tiny girl that she’s loved by people she’s never even met.

PS I was thinking of making another of these…anyone interested in a tutorial?

Bee Blocks and Winners!

Hi friends! I caught up on my quilting bee blocks this week, and had a lot of fun doing it. This one here is for Nedra of Cactus Needle–the block she asked us to make was from Allison’s Spin Cycle pattern. I’ve owned this pattern for a while, but never had a chance to make it, so it was fun to get a little taste. Makes me want to make my own! Nedra asked each of us to sign our block,  to remember the fun we’re having in our quilting bee.

The other bee block I made was for Erika of Pink Suede Shoe. She wanted an improv block with only horizontal and vertical lines. (Pardon the crazy, crazy coloring on this photo. There was some weird stuff going on with the noon day sun, smoke from the wildfires, and the half-asleep lady taking pictures.) It was fun to make this block, very relaxing. I basically just did whatever I wanted, didn’t stress about it, and I think it turned out pretty darn cute. Yay! Both blocks are going in the mail today.

Of course, I’m sure you all want to know who won the fun fabric giveaway! (Sorry for not announcing it yesterday…) My friend random.org chose out the winners for me. First, for the Simply Color Jr. Jelly Roll (Yay Ombre!) the winner is:

Sara!

She said:

I am going to guess Halloween! Ü

She guessed Halloween, which isn’t the holiday I made a project for, though rumor has it Halloween is covered in the book all the same. :)

The winner of the Marmalade Fat Eighth Bundle is:

Patricia S!

She wasn’t sure on which holiday I chose, but she was pretty confident she’d win, she said:

Sew many holidays to choose from…..sew I’ll assume I guessed correctly and while we’re at it….I’ll let you choose me to win…LOL!!

Finally, I had to throw in an extra prize for the person who guessed my project holiday and inspiration exactly right, so

Jayme Christensen

wins a sweet little charm pack of Salt Air from Cosmo Cricket for Moda. She said:

I’m gonna go with your Hanukkah/Christmas tradition of celebrating both to teach your children about their heritage. I love all your creativeness so I’m sure whatever your holiday was, it’s probably the cutest project ever!!

Aw, thanks Jayme!

I’ll be back soon to give you a sneak peak of my project and tell you more about it. Great job on the guessing you guys, and congratulations to the winners!
