Sweet Celebrations
with the Moda Bake Shop Chefs
 (and a giveaway!)

Alright people, I’ve got news. Big news. See that really cute book up there? It’s the second Moda Bake Shop book! I’m super excited about it because I loved the first Bake Shop book, but I’m even more excited because I got to contribute to it! It’s been almost a year since I submitted proposals and started sewing, and now, finally, finally, I can tell you about it!

The premise of the book is really fun. It’s all centered around holidays and celebrations, with tons of unique projects for every season and every party. It comes out this fall (October) and I can’t wait to show you more! I’d love to show you my projects, but that’s still a surprise–so instead, you get to guess what I made! Or rather, you get to guess which holiday my project is for.

And believe me, you want to guess, because here’s what’s in it for you. A Junior Jelly Roll of Simply Color Ombre strips–part of my sweet friend Vanessa Christenson’s debut line with Moda. You really, really, want to get your hands on some of this. It’s fabulous I tell you. (And if you don’t win, you can buy it in October).

So. Make a comment telling me what holiday you think my project is for. I’ll give you a hint: I’ve blogged about celebrating it here in my home. Then, tell your friends to guess too, because if there are more than 100 guesses, I’ll throw another prize into the mix.

Like I said, you’re going to want to tell your friends. Blog about it, Facebook it, Tweet it, whatever you have to do. ‘Cause you really want a chance at this Fat Eighth Bundle of Marmalade by Bonnie and Camille for Moda. If there aren’t a hundred entries, well, I’m going to keep it for myself (orange fabric!) and you’ll be the sad, sad, person waiting until October to get your hands on it.

Guess away my friends! (I’m so excited for this book, and these fabrics! October is going to be awesome!)

xoxo

What have you been up to?

Longarm Machine Quilting:
Kathy’s Red, White, and Black Quilt

Way, way, back in December I machine quilted this pretty little number for my awesome friend, Kathy. She made it for her little sister who requested red, white, and black piecing. When Kathy brought it to me she said “Do whatever you want!” <—Yay!

So I did.

I quilted the whole thing with red thread, for fun.

The quilt has several borders, and a pretty detailed center section, so I decided to try and emphasize that. In the middle, there is a lattice/irish chain pattern that divides the center into diamond shapes. I quilted a leaf chain along that lattice, and then freehand straight lines that alternate direction by row.

In the first border, the skinny red one, I did a simple loop.

In the second border, I did this. I don’t know what to call it.

In the outer red border, this.

I love, love, love how it turned out, but it was so hard to take pictures of.

I ended up having to take them in this high contrast light, which makes it look like I’m trying to be all moody or something. (I’m not.)

Isn’t it pretty?

PS Don’t forget, my Sweetie Pie pattern is on sale through Sunday night. Don’t forget to grab yours! (The discount code is at the bottom of Tuesday’s post.)

Sweetie Pie:
 Quilting Pattern #117

I first sketched out Sweetie Pie after seeing some retro brickwork at a home near mine. You know the kind.

(via Pattern a Day)

Once I got started on the pattern I realized not only how simple and sweet the design is, but also how versatile those petals are!

There are 9 different layout ideas in the pattern, and dozens more just waiting to be discovered.

I made two versions of the cover quilt using Sarah Jane’s Children at Play, and then, another version using Out to Sea (her newest line for Michael Miller, which ships late summer. (Ignore the weirdly colored pictures, they’re from Sarah’s booth at market, and lighting is always such a party there.)

I love that this pattern explains a technique and lets the quilter run with it, make it their own, and rearrange and redesign to their heart’s content! Plus–all that white space means room for some really fun quilting.

This is a perfect pattern for anyone new to applique, and a really fast pattern for anyone who already has some applique under their belt. And if you want to take it a step closer to heirloom status, you’re always welcome to hand stitch around each petal with some pretty thread.

I seriously love it.

This week only, get Sweetie Pie for $6 using the code SWEETIE. Code expires Sunday at 11pm MST. If you choose PDF download, you will have it in your hot little hands immediately. If you want the paper version, well, those should ship Wednesday. A little delay at the printers has me shipping a little later than I had hoped on printed patterns, but if you’ve placed an order, fear not! It’s coming your way ASAP, I swear.

Have a lovely Tuesday, sweet friends!

PS I just barely unpacked my bags from market this afternoon. I know, slacker. I have a stack of fun goodies I want to share with you. Just as soon as I get a decent picture taken. :)

PPS Notice anything different around here? What do you think? Still some tweaking to be done, but hey, isn’t there always?
