As promised in my Moda LOVE post, here’s the fun appliqué pattern I used on the back of my quilt! The pattern is formatted for fuseable web appliqué, and measures a whopping 13” x 32”. It’s pretty big, but I thought it was fun for the back of my quilt. Of course, if you want to take on some tiny appliqué, you could always reduce it by 50% and make a really fun pillow for your couch! (If you do that, send me pictures, I want to see.) If you’re new to appliqué, check out my tutorial here. It will help, I promise. :)
And remember! The Moda LOVE blog tour is still going strong, with a giveaway at every stop! Be sure to follow along and enter. I’ll announce my winner(S) on the 13th.
Hey there! Thanks for coming by for my day on the Moda Love blog tour! I’m excited to be here and show you my version of the Moda Love Layer Cake Quilt. I kinda LOVE it!
If you’ve never been here before, let me introduce myself really quickly. My name is April Rosenthal, and I am one of the newest designers for Moda (still can’t believe it.) My first line, Best. Day. EVER! is coming out so, so SOON! In fact, I’ve heard rumors that precuts have shipped and should be landing on doorsteps any minute now.
I am a pattern designer for my company, Prairie Grass Patterns, which I started 5 years ago when I had 18 month old twins. Obviously, I was crazy from sleep deprivation to start a business when I did, but it’s been such an incredible ride!
Like I just mentioned, I’m a mama to twins, a boy and a girl, who are 6 years old now. They are literally my world.
I’m so excited to be able to design for Moda (Best. Company. EVER!) and work with all the amazing people there. I love color, and fabric, and quilting, and creating with my hands. So, of course, I feel like my job is the absolute perfect thing for me.
Now, let’s talk about LOVE. :) I’ve been asked to answer a few questions, so here goes!
What is the best part of your design process?
My very favorite part of designing, whether it’s a quilt pattern, or a fabric line is when the whole thing just clicks. There is always excitement at the beginning with choosing colors, and having new ideas, but when the whole thing comes together just perfectly, it’s amazing.
I love the color……
Orange. Orange. Orange. I’m obsessed.
I would love to spend a day with……
My grandparents. They both passed away years and years ago, and I miss them like crazy. If we’re talking about love, they’re the first people I think about. I wish they could meet and love my children.
Finally, I LOVE my quilts! Especially this Moda LOVE Layer Cake quilt. First off, it’s super simple to make. Second, all it takes is a Layer Cake and a background fabric! I chose to use several of my white background prints to make this, but you could use just a single background too. Third, the pattern is FREE. (Click here to download it.) Can’t beat that. I can’t wait to see your versions! Be sure to post pictures on Facebook and Instagram and use the hashtag #modablogtour so we can all see!
I had a good time personalizing the back of my Moda LOVE quilt too! (I will post the free appliqué pattern this week.) I actually used the back of this quilt as my tablecloth at market…it helped me to remember to be cheerful even when I had to film videos. :)
Since the people over at Moda are so nice, I’d LOVE (alright, I’m getting cheesy now…) to give away some precuts! Just comment on this post telling me what color you LOVE and why. I’ll announce the winners on September 13th.
Be sure and stop by the other Moda designers’ blogs, to see their Moda LOVE quilts, and for more chances to win!
Thank you so much for coming by and come back soon!
PS Pssst! 20% off all PDF patterns in the shop through Sunday night with code MODALOVE.

Winners Announced on ALL Designer Blogs listed above
Today Amy and I are being featured over on the Moda blog, where a lot of people are probably hearing our fun news for the very first time! This little blog post marks our official “introduction” by Moda, and well, I’m just happy to be here! Head on over to read a little introduction, and if you’re here from the Moda blog, welcome! So glad you came by!
Another great thing about today? I get to show you new patterns! I’ve been working like crazy trying to get not only these patterns but my book quilts done before market. It’s been a pretty crazy ride! My kids have now started asking if I can please just make dinner instead of going to a “food place”, and my poor husband basically has 2 full time jobs–his day job, and the upkeep of the house and laundry when he gets home. They’ve been so sweet and supportive of my dreams, and I’m so glad I can finally start showing and telling–and playing with my kids and cleaning my house. (Yes. I just said I’m looking forward to cleaning my house.)
Here they are! Paper patterns are available for preorder now in the shop, they will ship June 1. PDFs coming soon.
Jigsaw: A fast and fun Layer Cake quilt! You could whip this one up in a day or two for pretty much anyone. They’ll love it. Guaranteed.
Dahlia: This baby is a stunner. You’ll want to take a look at these blocks over on Instagram–I leaked a few photos the other day. Basically, I’m in love with this quilt, and you will be too. You’ll want the templates to cut your pieces accurately–and get this–it’s ALL machine pieced. Yep.
Modern Hex: This twin size quilt just might be my favorite ever. I mean really–it’s rainbows, and triangles, and hexagons, and stars–all in one quilt! What’s not to love?
First Date: The perfect Jelly Roll quilt, even if your first date wasn’t so perfect. And of course, you know how I feel about little squares. :)
Finally, Whirlwind. A perfect and GORGEOUS baby quilt. A little bit of paper piecing goes a long way.
I will get lots of pictures of the real quilts just as soon as I take a nap, play with my kids, and eat something besides take out.
I’m heading out to Pittsburgh Wednesday afternoon, and can’t wait for the whirlwind that is always Quilt Market. If you’re going, come say hi! I’ll be in the Moda (eek!) Designer Showcase showing off Best. Day. EVER! and these super fun quilts I’ve designed to go along with it. I’d love to meet you and see some friendly faces!
New patterns are available for preorder in the shop, including templates for two of the patterns. Speaking of the shop, if you haven’t seen, Russian Rubix and Rubix Too templates are there also.
Can’t wait to hear what you think of the new patterns! Tell me! Tell me!
Keeping this in mind today as I go about my business mindfully. 8 days until I fly out to International Quilt Market!
